How Can You Help Your Child?
The number one thing I'm asked is:
How can I help my struggling child at home with math?
My answer is always the same.
Practice those basic math facts every single night on top of the homework sent home. Every skill we learn is connected to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. If your child is not fluent with their facts, then there's a good chance they are struggling with the skills taught daily.
What is fluency? Fluency is being able to answer a math fact within three seconds of it being seen. A good 15 minutes of practice every night will build the fluency your child needs to succeed.
So back to our question, what can you do? Sit down with your child and use flash cards to practice their facts. I know as parents we are very busy, but I promise it works. If you don't have flash cards at home I have placed a link at the bottom of this page to download some that can be printed at home. There are also some great apps or websites online that you can download for free and use. I've made a list of the ones I have used this year and in previous years to build fluency with my own child.

The math slide apps are amazing. They are competitive games, but can be played alone. I have them all on my classroom iPad. The flash cards are also apps that my own son has on his iPod and my phone to practice his facts while I'm driving and I hear "I'm bored."
